10 days ago I discovered Corset Crafters was running a competition to make a corset using unorthodox materials.
The whole family got involved in thinking of unusual materials to use. VOLT-reborn suggested using a lorry loading strap.
The obvious style of corset was a ribbon corset. Problem number one was the timescale. I've never made a ribbon corset before, so I wasn't sure what problems I'd have. Problem number two was model. As anyone who's ever made a corset knows it's not easy to fit a corset to oneself. So VOLT-reborn volunteered.
The final problem was how to stop the loading strap from fraying when I cut it. In the end I held the cut edges over a candle flame to melt them.
I chose to keep the waist 'ribbon' in one piece and sew it on top of the other 'ribbons' because in this corset it is the ratchet attached to the 'ribbon' that is the closure and waist reducer. The top and bottom of the back opening is held close with rigid blue electrical wire, to complement both the colour of the corset and the unusual materials.
Purchase of 1 five ton lorry loading strap, 10 hours cutting, melting, sewing, handsewing (my machine couldn't cope with more than three layers of lorry strap) later, et voila, one rather chunky male corset.
Thanks.
I loved the idea when VOLT-reborn came up with it. I wasn't sure how the ratchet would work but once it was finished I just fell in Love with it. So butch!
Awesome idea! I love the industrial theme, and the colour is awfully pretty. ^_^

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
This contest ends on Friday the 18th December 2009. If you want to enter, get your entries in quick! Here are all the entries so far. Also if you want to donate a prize, that would be fantastic too, just note me

Luckily they were also on offer in the local DIY shed so it didn't cost an arm and a leg. I'd hate to buy 20 or so for a lorry though
